Production process of calcium hydroxide powder Ca(OH)2
Tóm tắt nội dung
What is Ca(OH)2 lime powder? How is lime powder produced? What are its applications in human life? Join Loc Thien Chemicals as we explore the chemical Ca(OH)2 in today's article.
Information about Ca(OH)2 lime powder:
Ca(OH)2 lime powder is a chemical compound that exists as colorless crystals or a white powder. It is produced by reacting Calcium Oxide (CaO), or quicklime, with water—a process known as "slaking." It can also precipitate when a solution containing Calcium Chloride (CaCl2) is mixed with a solution containing Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH).
Properties of lime powder:
- A white solid, appearing as crystals or powder.
- It is slightly soluble in water, forming a calcium hydroxide solution.
- Melts at 580oC.
- Molar mass: 74.093 g/mol.
- Ca(OH)2 is odorless and flammable.

Step 1: Raw material selection:
To produce lime powder, raw materials must first be selected. This is not only a critical factor but also decisive for the final product's quality and efficiency. Common raw materials include natural limestone and other calcium carbonate sources. Choosing materials with high CaCO3 and CaO content helps save fuel and reduces impurities, ensuring a high-quality end product.
Step 2: Grinding the raw materials:
Since slaked lime remains in large chunks, the next step involves grinding it into smaller particles. This is crucial—after grinding, the limestone is classified to separate particles of the desired size before being stored.
Step 3: Lime calcination:
Calcination is the most critical stage in Ca(OH)2 lime powder production, determining the final product's quality. First, limestone (CaCO3) is heated to the required temperature and maintained for a specific duration. This triggers the key chemical reaction:
CaCO3 → CaO + CO2
Once CaO is obtained, it is slaked with water to produce Ca(OH)2. Note: CaO is highly hygroscopic, so sufficient water must be added and continuously stirred:
CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2 + Q
Slaked lime Ca(OH)2 formation is an exothermic reaction, generating significant heat that boils water and releases steam. Safety precautions are essential during calcination to prevent severe burns or life-threatening accidents.
After CaO fully hydrates, wait 2–10 days (depending on the pit size) for the lime to cool and form a malleable paste. The white lime milk layer on the surface is impurity-free, as all residues settle at the bottom.
The pliable lime layer is then scooped, weighed, and packaged.
Step 4: Packaging and storage:
The product is packaged in various sizes per market demand, ensuring sealed packaging to prevent dust pollution. The Ca(OH)2 lime powder is then transported to storage facilities, which must be safe, ventilated, and dry.
