What are aquaculture chemicals?

Aquaculture chemicals are a group of specialized chemical compounds used in aquaculture (shrimp, pangasius, tilapia, crab, etc.) to improve pond bottoms, disinfect water sources, stabilize pH and total alkalinity, and eliminate disease-causing bacteria before stocking. Unlike industrial wastewater treatment chemicals, aquaculture chemicals must meet QCVN 02:2019/BNNPTNT — National technical regulation on feed, drugs, and chemicals in aquaculture.

Lime CaO & Ca(OH)₂ — Pond Bottom Improvement, pH Stabilization

Quicklime CaO (CAS 1305-78-8) is a pure form of calcium oxide that reacts exothermically with water, sterilizing and killing parasites, and quickly increasing pond bottom pH. Dosage for pond bottom remediation: 500–1,000 kg/ha; spread evenly after drying the pond bottom for ≥3 days. CaO should not be used when the pond contains water as the exothermic reaction will affect aquatic life.
Lime calcium hydroxide (CAS 1305-62-0) — Calcium hydroxide, acts slower but is safer when the pond still has water. Dosage for pond renovation with water: 150–300 kg/ha; adjusting water pH: 20–50 kg/ha when pH <7.0. Ca(OH)₂ also helps precipitate heavy metals (Fe²⁺, Mn²⁺) out of the water column, improving clarity.

Chlorine Ca(OCl)₂ — Pond Disinfection

Chlorine Ca(OCl)₂ 60–70% (CAS 7778-54-3) is the strongest disinfectant active ingredient used in aquaculture ponds. Broad spectrum of elimination: Vibrio bacteria (causes shrimp disease), Aeromonas (fish), fungi, viruses. Dosage for disinfecting pond water before stocking: 10–30 ppm equivalent to 1.5–5 kg / 1,000 m³ of water (depending on pH and temperature).
The quarantine period after chlorine disinfection should be at least 5-7 days (to allow Cl₂ to decompose to a level <0.01 mg/L) before releasing shrimp/fish fry. Residual Cl should be measured with a test kit before releasing fry. Combine with water aerators to increase Cl₂ evaporation faster.

Dolomite — pH Buffering & Total Alkalinity

Dolomite CaMg(CO₃)₂ (CAS 16389-88-1) is a calcium-magnesium double carbonate mineral, finely ground for use in aquaculture ponds to: (1) raise and stabilize pH when pH <7.5; (2) increase total alkalinity (TA) to the optimum range of 80–150 mg/L CaCO₃ — the ideal threshold for shrimp; (3) provide Mg²⁺ to support shrimp molting.
Dolomite Dosage: Alkalinity increase of 10 mg/L: apply 15–20 kg/1,000 m² (depending on pond depth). Apply in the morning on sunny days (lowest pH of the day) to avoid alkalinity shock. Dolomite acts slower and more gently than lime, suitable for periodic application every 5–7 days to maintain alkalinity.
