Main Applications of NaOH Flakes 96%–99%
Saponification
NaOH flakes 96%-99% react with fats (coconut oil, palm oil, animal fat) to form soap and glycerol. Saponification index: ~100 g of oil requires 13.9 g of NaOH. Dissolve the NaOH in cold water first (NOT the other way around) to control the heat.
2. Paper Manufacturing (Kraft Pulping)
99% flake NaOH (CAS 1310-73-2) dissolves the lignin in wood, releasing cellulose. Kraft process: NaOH solution 12–15% + Na₂S, cooked at 160–170°C, pressure 7–8 bar. Output standard: QCVN 12-MT:2015/BTNMT.
3. Dyeing (Mercerization)
NaOH 15–20% is used to treat cotton fabric at 15–25°C to enhance luster, durability, and dye uptake. Wastewater from textile dyeing after mercerization must be neutralized in accordance with QCVN 40:2025/BTNMT (superseding QCVN 40:2011, effective Sept 1, 2025) before discharge.

Solution holder Always add NaOH to water (DO NOT add water to NaOH) – the reaction is highly exothermic.
